7/7/2023 0 Comments Reviews of demon copperhead![]() Finally, to me, the climax at the Devil's Bathtub felt forced and not believable - there was no good reason for Demon to go the one place that he swore he would never go, and it felt to me that there were too many coincidences that occurred in that place. Demon's ability to get sober in his first try at rehab seemed too easy and just didn't ring true to me. Another flaw to the plot was that the author spent about 95% of the book on the downward arc of Demon's life, and then in the last 5% his life suddenly takes an upturn. By the end, all the bad stuff that happened to Demon just seemed like too much. ![]() I also think the plot was too predictable - it went through all the standard tropes regarding Appalachia - drug-addled teenage Mom, child forced to take care of mother instead of vice-versa, bad stepfather comes along, abusive foster childcare system, poor educational system, football as religion and more important than education, the devastating impact of the opioid epidemic, plus a lot more. I think this book would have benefited from some careful pruning, making it less verbose and more focused. Yes, I know it's modeled after David Copperfield, but I've always found Dickens overly dramatic and verbose, but that was the style when he was writing over 150 years ago. I think one of the reasons for this is that I found the plot too melodramatic. While I thought this book was very good and well-written, it left me feeling a little dissatisfied. ![]()
